Erratic mouse/pointer behavior

The mouse pointer drifts to sys tray and right clicks on clock.  Behavior occurs most frequently when trying to run things.  Have been to Lenovo's website and installed System updates, firmware and even Microsofts fix KB920295 without resolution.  IBM feels it's software related however hard drive was swapped between laptops and the problem stayed with the laptop.

Thinkpad does not respond - bizzare!

Hi, Based on your post/description that it was not the laptop that was dropped and that all the connections are snugly fitted to where they should be, the dropping of the moused caused the laptop to be dead, then it is likely that the +5VDC of the mouse cable has shorted to the ground wire. The short is reflected towards inside the motherboard of your laptop. This +5VDC is common to all the USB ports, PS2 ports, and many other parts of the laptop. The short would open up a fuse somewhere inside. I can only surmise that the power supply is involved. You may need to check that the powersupply/AC adaptor (if present) is giving juice to your laptop with the use of a VOM, since as I understand it, simply plugging in your laptop to the mains would lit an indicator that ACpower is available. Normally a surface mounted fuse is on the motherboard right after the jack where the AC adaptor plug comes in and right before a reverse protection diode. If you are uncomfortable opening your unit and would not be in a position to do component level repair, you are probably better off seeking the services of a qualified service professional. Hope this give you and idea. Good luck and kind regards.

How to reinstall windows xp thinkpad x41 - Lenovo ThinkPad X41 Tablet PC

How to Reload Windows XP Without Removing Files Deleting system files, modifying the registry and installing incompatible drivers to Windows XP can damage the integrity of the operating system, rendering it inoperable. Virus infections are often responsible for making the aforementioned changes to a system, but employees who have administrative access to the workstation can make deleterious modifications to the OS as well. Reinstalling Windows XP can repair the OS, but if work-related files are stored to the system partition, all of the data will be erased during the installation process. To reload Windows XP without losing files, you can perform an in-place upgrade, also known as a repair installation. Step 1 Insert the Windows XP CD into the optical drive and then press "Ctrl-Alt-Del" to restart the computer. Step 2Press any key when prompted to load the contents of the disc. Press "Enter" on the Welcome to Setup screen. Step 3 Read the license agreement, pressing "PgDn" to scroll down the page. Press "F8" to agree to the terms. The CD will search for previous installations of Windows XP. Step 4 Press "R" to repair the selected operating system. The disc will begin reinstalling the operating system to the hard drive without affecting personal files. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the repair installation. Step 5 Log in to Windows XP and sign on to the Internet when installation completes. Click "Start," "All Programs" and then "Windows Update." Step 6 Click "Scan for Updates" to search for applicable service packs and hotfixes to reinstall to the OS. Step 7 Click "Install Now" to bring the in-place upgrade up-to-date. Things Needed Windows XP CD Tip Make sure you have your Windows XP product key (found on the CD cover or on the computer case) available prior to reinstallation. Warnings If possible, back up your files previous to the installation in case something goes awry during the process. You will need to reinstall all non-native programs and removable devices after performing an in-place upgrade.

Tablet PC 2005 Input Panel won't work.

Are you pressing down firmly enough? If not, sounds like the digitizer may have a problem... The digitizer is the layer in front of the lcd, it's job is to pick up the signal from your pen and send it to the motherboard. The motherboard should have two connections to the screen, one to the lcd itself and another to the digitizer. If you remove the screws on the bottom of the tablet you can take off the keyboard and see if both are connected right.

IBM Thinkpad X41 wont turn on.

I have the same problem. I have swapped the memory, hard drive, keypad, network card and modem with the same components of another tablet. I did each component seperately into the known good machine. this machine boots with each of these components and the bad machine still will not boot with known good components. I believe that it is either the motherboard or processor. Not worth the cost. ebay has some machines for 200-300 dollars.
