"USB Device Not Recognized" - any usb device

Any device I insert into any of the four USB ports on my laptop results in a bubble from the task tray popping up informing me that the "usb device cannot be recognized". The only thumbdriveI've tried to use freezes the laptop as well. This is a recent situation. USB devices used to work. I can't recall an incident that'd cause the USB ports' malfunction. From the laptops first day with me it had XP pro installed (by me) in place of vista basic. Toshiba doesn't provide XP drivers for this laptop model or XP compatible bios updates. I've yet to try vista and play with power settings and drive

Recently I got a Fujitsu p1120 lifebook from e-bay - the unit works fine but the hard drive was wiped clean (no restore image, etc.) so I removed it and formatted it in a micronpc transport gx3 notebook using a windows xp sp2 service copy. I reinstalled the drive and tried to boot the little computer only to find that after the initial startup screen starts it locks up. I checked the usb ports and they work giving me a message "format drive" when a memory stick adaptor is used. Now I read that by changing the boot sequence using cmos to force the usb port as the first boot device and a usb cd rom I can reformat the drive in the machine using my service copy of win xp sp2. I ordered an external usb cd rom new from ebay and plan to try the suggested method. It's clear you have to format the drive in a fujitsu machine, I've run across this many times in the past with other computers like compaq and hp and was just wondering if you had any advice or pearls of wisdom regarding this task I would be very grateful. I referbish computers and give them to underprivliged kiddos in my neighborhood so this repair will touch a very needy child, thank you so very much for your help and advice - I eagerly await your reply. I received the AEBK07FS LIBRE Color eBook Reader on Saturday (02/19/2011). It was working beautifully until today (21/02/2011) when I tried to update it with the firmware. I followed the instructions for the update, but the sytem never updated and now the ebook reader does not turn on at all (when you plug in the usb cable to the computer the blue light goes on but the computer does not recognize the usb connection and says there is no device connected). IT APPEARS THERE NO LONGER IS AN OPERATING SYSTEM. Please help. I love this reader!

The connection from your computer to this device is not there as you know already. Shut down the computer unplug the eBook from your computer. Now unplug the computer from the wall or power supply push in the power button you will see a flash if you have a desktop computer. If it is a laptop unplug the laptop power supply. Now restart the computer do not plug in the eBook yet let windows settle down. Once it has started and is ready to go. Now plug in the eBook. It should pick it up and work for you. If not then you will need to re-install the driver. If you have the disk just go ahead and do the software over again unplug the eBook first. Now once the software is installed for your device it now should work again. If that does not work. Open properties from my computer and select devices then find the driver for your device and delete it. It will take you through a series of questions. Just click on delete the driver "YES" now restart the computer again with the device plugged in this time it will ask you for a driver file click on search for drivers online. It will load the driver for you especially if you have Win 7 installed on your computer. If this does not work go online to the support site for your device and download the driver files, Click Here then go and install the driver files again with the device plugged in. This should solve the issue for you. Thanks for using FixYa! Please comment if this assisted you in any way thanks John

Just bought a cruz reader r101....usb says device not recognized. I am on XP sp3

Before you can communicate with your computer you must run CruzSync from the desktop. There are some driver files that must be sent from cruz to point the way to the reader. After you do this it should connect every time. Some time you will have to pull the USB out and put it back end, especially if the reader or the computer has just woke up from a sleep or hibernation mode. ZumoDrive is the account you must set up when you click or press on CruzSync to make all of this happen. Hope this helps
