I'm having problems upgrading from Windows ME to Windows XP Professional..

I have a Toshiba Satellite 6125CDT that I just bought on Ebay. It is a pentium III, core2, 192MB RAM, New 40GB HDD, COA WIN98/NT and has WIN ME installed. I have a Windows XP Professional (authentic) CD that I have tried to upgrade with several times. It gets to the step of preparing the installation and part way through it gives me a message that a file "can't be read by the optical device being used." That would be the CD ROM. It does this on three files which are critical for installation so when it restarts my computer to intall the files, it won't load. I have to turn off the computer

Toshiba 1625CDT CD-ROM

How old is the cd-rom? Dust, and years of use can cause the laser to wear out or misalign.Try blowing hard inside with the drawer open (silly, isn't it? but I am not joking. my place is dust prone and I have to do that all the time). But if it is as old as the operating system, maybe it is time to get a new drive.

It is not that hard to remove the drive, though, if you are prone to have leftover screws when you take devices apart, you should get help. Virus or PC problem?

Sounds like a hardware problem. And since your computer is failing like that, my guess is it is the hard drive making that noise. You need to isolate the location of that noise. If it is coming from the hard drive I suggest you back up your data *immediately* using some kind of CDROM based disk imaging software where you can boot to the cd (so you use the hard drive as little as possible). One such program is Image For Linux (

Arter upgrade window 8 to window8.1 now had problems internet connection limited , can't search anything now

This was an official upgrade offered by Samsung, or did you use another source? Be aware a tablet is not a PC. The different microprocessors and internal architecture can make them all react different. Only use Samsung certified upgrades. When you did and it does not work as you like, just contact Samsung support on this link: Samsung They really help.

OK, you don't need to format. You can insert the CD and restart. You can ask to install but then the computer will say you already have a OS installed. You can press R to repair the OS. Your computer may have a recovery method. Some vendors don't give you a CD but recovery system is fed into a separate partition of the hard disk. See the documentation and check whether you have such a system. Please feel free to ask for advice any time. Repairing a OS is quite safe. You will not loose any software or updates. Remember, don't press R at the first screen where you are given a chance to go to recovery console. There is very little you could do there. First ask to install then ask to repair the existing one. After repairing the system, the first thing you need to do is to install a reliable Antivirus Software.
