Machine freezes up...needs hard boot

My Portege M400 locks up and the fans turn on to full speed shortly after. Needs a hard boot to restart. This does not seem to be an OS problem or drivers as it may occur at any time, even before windows starts. Not heat related as it can sometimes occur at first use. Seems to occur when machine is moved slightly. Tried turning off accelerometers but no difference Had read on different posts about a ongoing motherboard problem with these.... Any ideas?

WHEN I LOAD OS IT SAID NO HARD DISK - Toshiba Portege M400 PPM40U01000E Tablet PC

I did find this manual for it it might be somewhere in it of how the bios sees the hard drive. normally a bios will boot to the DVD drive first then a hard drive so make sure you dont have anything connected like a USB or a cd in the DVD drive unless it is the OS software. also disconnect the network cable if it is plugged in.

I have a Toshiba Portege M400. It runs ok if I leave it on a flat surface. However, if I try to move it the screen freezes up and the fan starts running very loudly. I am unable to do anything except cut power and start the computer up again. Recently I have also had problems getting it to start unless the screen is in a particular position.

Sounds like there might be dust inside of the laptop that is blocking one of the air vents. Plus the connectors to the screen may need to be reseated so that way the screen can be moved freely without it locking up on you and cutting off. You have two issues going on. Bring it to somebody so they can open it up and make sure the air vents are cleaned out. Also they need to make sure the CPU fan is running properly. Then with the screen the connectors need to be reseated. Its also quite possible the screen connector might need to be replaced. If the laptop is under warranty see if Toshiba will reapir it.

Portege m500 not starting

If you have the system window disk that came with the tablet pc. Then you can try to do a repair on windows. It takes a little know how, but it is not hard if you are up to it. The dos command when you get in the repair function of windows xp setup is FIXBOOT. This might fix it, but if it doesnt or you dont want to try call a local pc technician and they should be able to get it going again.
