Don't know how to get rid of hard drive password on toshiba lapto

Bought toshiba portege m200 laptop on E-bay. It has a harddrive password that warns, in the bios, that it can not be removed. Can it? I know if I bring it to a toshiba repair shop, they can do it for a lot of money. Do you have the answer for me?

Don't know how to get rid of hard drive password on toshiba lapto

A hard drive password can only be removed by the person who knows the password because then it can be cleared thru the BIOS. Otherwise the only other way around it is the buy a new hard drive so it doesn't have a password and you can then reinstall the operating system on the hard drive and then put the drivers on it and any other programs that you want on it.

Startup takes least a good 5 minutes

Hi LynneYou may remove unnecessary startup items by using MSCONFIG utility. You may keep only Toshiba Touchpad utility and Essential security programs. Perform maintenance like using Disk clean up and disk error checking. Also using the performance settings definitely will create significant change. If you need further assistance you may post again I will reply asap. Good Luck

Portege 3500 Hello I have a Portege 3500 and am using Windows XP tablet PC edition. When I turn it on Windows Page shows but then the screen goes blank and it goes no further. It does not have a cd drive so I bought a Philips CD Drive but laptop does not seem to recognise it. Any ideas how I can get the Recovery and Config Builder disks as I have lost Disk 1 and how do I make my cd disk usable or do I have to use a Toshiba cd drive. Much appreciated. Thanks Mrs P

I have had the same problem. I tried a new hard drive but that didn't work. I found the recovery discs I had were faulty and got new ones from Toshiba (took about a week). Connect the CD drive with the first disc installed and power on, hold the "C" key down and it should look to the CD drive to boot up. You can also watch for the "Toshiba" screen which has a line of icons across the bottom (I think they represent *network *CD drive *floppy drive and some others) and you can press the right or left arrow keys and see an indicator under each icon move from one to the next, stop under the CD drive. I was told by a BestBuy Geek squad tech that it could easily be a motherboard error and it's not worth repairing as those parts are more than a new laptop. I did get a blue-screen error message the first time I tried the new recovery discs, but the second time worked. When you're successful the system will be back in 2003 (or whatever year the computer was sold) and you'll have to download updates from Toshiba and from MS Windows. As I'd run the recovery-and-update several times I found that updating Windows XP beyond Service Pak 2 gave me more errors, when I stopped with SP2 it runs OK. It's a great machine but age catches up.

I want to add RAM to my Toshiba Portege M405-S8003 but I can't find the memory slot. The only things I see underneath my laptop are the battery pack, a square-shaped slot (when I opened it, there's a paper label on it; definitely won't fit a RAM chip) and the hard drive. I'm thinking that maybe the memory slot is underneath the hard drive (which I find weird)...but I'm reluctant to remove it because I'm not sure if I'm right. If my hunch is correct, please let me know...I really need to update my tablet. Thanks and happy new year!

Hi,the Ram slot you are looking for is underneath the keyboard,if you have expertise on uncoupling and re-coupling a system then proceed,if not take to a qualified technician to that for you wont take any time.

Matshita DVD-Ram UJ-810 I/O Device Error with most DVDs Cds

We have had out Toshiba P25-S509 for a very long time. It's a great laptop and watching DVDs with a wide screen was great; That is, until the CD/DVD player was no longer recognized by the computer. We took it in (still under warranty) to have it fixed, only to not work again after a couple of months. Now YEARS have gone by and I have bought another Toshiba (M305D-S4831) which is great unless you try to reboot and it doesn't fully start up. That's for another review, not this one... So, back to the P25-S509 and YEARS later. We just received two 1GB memory cards, which are being used to replace the "stock" two 256 MB memory cards. Well, the computer is MUCH FASTER and THE DVD PLAYER FINALLY WORKS!!! Woo-Hoo! $98.00 investment in memory cards saved up from ditching the older Toshiba. Hope this review helps someone out there that might have had the same problem.
