It’s not a tablet in the strictest sense, but Lenovo announced its X220T convertible notebook today which I think we’re safe to cover, on account of the fact that it when the screen is swung into tablet mode it’s only just over 3cm deep at its widest point. That’s about two and a half times the depth of an iPad 2 but it’s still going to be pretty portable and has all the other features you’d expect from a tablet, including a multitouch screen.
That screen is what’s intriguing me right now. The datasheet for the Lenovo X220T says that there will be two models, one with a resistive touch overlay that requires a stylus and one capacative one that is more finger and gesture friendly. Both of them, though, use IPS technology for the panel. That means they should have much better colour accuracy and viewing angles than any tablet we’ve seen so far. Backed up by the Intel Core processors inside and what you have with the X220T is a machine which could meet the demands of photography and video editing pros who want a thin and light for the road.
In other words, Lenovo is challenging all of Apple’s core audience with this one.
It’s not going to be cheap, though. The US pricing starts at $1199, which puts it on a par with the MacBook Pro rather than the iPad. Still, if it’s everything you need in one, it could be worth it.
